On 24th June this year, the second Career Day at Egerton University attracted 27 Kenya-based Chinese Companies and 300+ fresh graduates. Professor Isaac O. Kibwage, the Vice-Chancellor at Egerton University, and the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Professor Richard Mulwa, also graced the event. Through this event sponsored by the Confucius Institute, many students had the opportunity to meet potential employers. The 27 Kenya based Chinese companies offered 123 vacancies to our fresh graduands and the successful ones secured job opportunities immediately after graduation despite the Covid 19 pandemic. The vacancies offered were across all the sectors, including agriculture, ecotourism and natural resource management, engineering, transport and logistics, business management and commerce, English translators, administrators, health sectors and other related sectors.
Because of the ongoing pandemic, the organizers took extra precautions from planning to execution to ensure that high safety standards for Covid-19 prevention were observed to the letter. The venue setting followed the safe-distancing guidelines, hand sanitization points were set up at the entry points, and all participants were required to wear face masks and sanitize their hands. Additionally, security personnel were also present to ensure order.
Many students showed up, dressed in their best, hands full of resumes. Finding work in the middle of a global pandemic has not been easy for most people, and the students were very grateful to have the opportunity to be hired right after school. The company representatives also expressed their satisfaction at the event's success and looked forward to future cooperation with the Confucius Institute and the university.
