Call for Scholarship Applications under the TAGDev 2.0 Programme for the 2025/2026 Academic Year at Egerton University

1.0 Background
The Regional Universities Forum for Capacity Building in Agriculture (RUFORUM) in partnership with Mastercard Foundation, Gulu University (Uganda), Egerton University (Kenya), Africa University (Zimbabwe), University of Free State (South Africa), Malawi University of Science and Technology (Malawi), University of Eldoret (Kenya), Uganda Martyrs University (Uganda), University of Port Harcourt (Nigeria), University of Cape Coast (Ghana), University of Bamenda (Cameroon), National University of Agriculture (Benin), and Université Mohammed VI Polytechnique (Morocco) are implementing a 10 year programme (2023-2033) called Transforming African Agricultural Universities to Meaningfully Contribute to Africa’s Growth and Development (TAGDev 2.0). The programme seeks to strengthen universities and TVET institutions to better serve communities by skilling and empowering Africa’s young people and their institutions to drive inclusive, equitable and climate resilient transformation of agriculture and agrifood systems. The TAGDev 2.0 programme will support young African students that are economically disadvantaged but academically competent to access university education. The scholarship is open to both female and male applicants. However, females, refugees, internally displaced persons, and persons with disabilities are highly encouraged to apply.
2.0 Eligible Programmes
This call for Scholarships for the 2025/2026 academic year is open to applicants interested in and eligible to study Bachelor of Science in Community Development, Bachelor of Agribusiness Management, Bachelor of Science in Food Science and Technology, Master of Science in Animal Nutrition, Master of Science in Food Science, Master of Science in Soil Science, Master of Science in Agricultural Engineering at Egerton University, Kenya.
2.1. General Admission Requirements to Egerton University

Bachelor of Science in Community Development |
i. Applicants must have a Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) minimum mean grade of C+ (plus) or its equivalent. ii. Applicants must have passed KCSE with the following minimum grades in the following subjects: a. Biology/Biological Sciences C+ b. Chemistry/Physical Sciences C+ c. One humanity or applied sciences C+ iii. Applicants with a minimum of Credit at Diploma level (or Pass with at least two years of relevant experience) in community development or any other relevant field from institutions recognized by Egerton University Senate may be considered for admission. |
Bachelor of Agribusiness Management |
i. Applicants must have obtained a mean grade of C+ (Plus) in KCSE with at least • Grade C+ in English/Kiswahili • Grade C in Mathematics/Physics, Biology/Biological Sciences/ Agriculture and Chemistry ii. An added advantage will be given to applicants who have passed with at least C+ grade in Business or related studies iii. Admission may be granted to outstanding diploma holder who have passed with Distinction or Credit or equivalent in Management, Farm Resources Management or other discipline recognized by the Egerton University Senate. |
Bachelor of Science in Food Science and Technology |
• Minimum Requirements for admission i. Applicants must have obtained a mean grade of C+ (Plus) in KCSE with at least grade C in • English/Kiswahili • Mathematics/Physics • Biology/Agriculture • Chemistry ii. Alternatively, admission may be granted to Diploma in Dairy Technology or Food Technology holders or equivalent from an institution recognized by Egerton University Senate having graduated with CREDIT or higher. |

Master of Science in Animal Nutrition |
Minimum Requirements for admission i. The programme is open to holders of BSc degree with an upper second class and above or an equivalent grade in: Animal Science, Agriculture, Range Management, Veterinary Medicine or any other degree programme deemed relevant by the Department of Animal Sciences from institutions recognized by the Egerton University Senate. ii. A candidate with lower second class and relevant work experience of at least 3 years and one (1) scientific publication in a refereed journal may be recommended for admission. iii. In certain circumstances, the candidate may be required to audit some prescribed under- graduate courses in which a B grade pass shall be mandatory for admission to be granted. |
Master of Science in Soil Science |
Minimum Requirements for admission i. Admission shall be offered to holders of a first degree in General Agriculture or related disciplines, with an Upper Second-Class Honours and above or equivalent qualification from recognized Institutions. ii. In exceptional cases, the Senate may also admit to the Masters programme, non-holders of Upper Second-Class Honours Degrees, provided such candidates can prove, on the basis of research and academic work they have done, that they are well qualified to undertake Post Graduate work by passing Qualifying Examinations. |
Master of Science in Agricultural Engineering |
Admission shall be offered to holders of a first degree in Agricultural Engineering, Biosystems Engineering, Environmental Engineering or any other related discipline with at least i) Upper second-class honours or equivalent qualification from a recognized institution, OR ii) Lower Second-class, with two years’ experience in relevant fields. |

3.0 Eligibility for Scholarships
Scholarships are open to candidates in Kenya and other East Africa Countries implementing the common East Africa Higher Education protocol (Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, Birundi and South Sudan) from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. Refugees, Displaced Person (RDPs) and Persons With Disability (PWDs) are encouraged to apply. The applicant has to be in position to qualify for admission into undergraduate and/or postgraduate programmes at Egerton University. All applicants should read and thoroughly understand the admission criteria for the relevant programmes at Egerton University. Students already having a scholarship of any kind are not eligible to benefit from this scholarship opportunity. Anyone with a double scholarship if found will automatically be discontinued. Beneficiaries of TAGDev scholarships are not eligible to apply.
3.2 Selection criteria
- Be a national of Kenya and East African countries implementing the common East Africa Higher Education Protocol (Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, Birundi and South Sudan)
- Be from economically disadvantaged, marginalized communities, Refugee, Displaced persons and Persons with
- Be less than 30 years for undergraduate and less than 35 years for masters studies at the time of application.
- Should have completed secondary school and/or diploma for a Bachelors degree application not more than four years (2021- 2024) from the time of this call.
- The applicant should meet admission criteria to be eligible programmes in Egerton
- For admission into Egerton University for an undergraduate degree programme one must have attained the requirements provided in the Egerton University Statutes 37 (2) c of 2023 or its equivalent. The common University Rules and Regulations for the Master’s Degree programmes specified in the Egerton University Statute 40 (2) of 2023 shall apply.
- Demonstrate interest in agriculture, agribusiness and entrepreneurship.
- Demonstrate leadership
- Have commitment to working in agriculture and agricultural value chains.
- Have a strong commitment to community

3.3. What the scholarship covers
This is a full board comprehensive scholarship that covers: tuition fees, research costs, workshop and conference costs, living expenses including stipend and hostel, laptop, internship attachment, community engagement and field attachment, entrepreneurship training and transportation. Consequently, considering the level of investment, successful applicants will be required to become high achievers, highly engaging and focused students/graduates and change makers contributing to outreach services in the communities, capable of creating enterprises that create jobs for themselves and others and have personal satisfaction and dynamism.
3.4.Support to Refugees, Displaced Persons (RDPs) and Persons With Disabilities (PWDs).
In addition to other scholars benefits, RDPs and PWDs will recieve the following support:
- RDPs will be supported with travel documents
- PWDs will recieve assistive devices to support learning and movement during the course of studies.
3.5. Nature of the scholarship
This is a comprehensive scholarship with direct and indirect costs that will be covered by the TAGDev 2.0 programme through the implementing university where the student will be studying. Indirect costs such as participation in the international conference will be directly covered by the RUFORUM Secretariat. The following further apply:
- Direct costs for student training will be transferred to the university as a grant payable to the university. The students will receive their respective services and entitlements from the university as the implementer and where necessary from RUFORUM.
- All scholarships will be on a rolling basis implying that, the scholarship will be renewed on annual basis subject to satisfactory academic performance at grade B level of Egerton university.
- Retaking more than four courses will lead to the withdrawal of the scholarship awarded to the candidate.
- Applicants who may be discovered to have falsified information in order to gain advantage of the scholarship shall be disqualified on confirmation of the falsification and/or
- Any misconduct (breaching university rules especially examination malpractice, violence towards others) on the part of the successful applicant shall lead to automatic disqualification and loss of the scholarship.
- Successful applicants will be expected to become champions and transformative leaders, entrepreneurs and change makers at various levels and shall remain communicating with RUFORUM and the Universities as part of the Programme
4.0 Application process and procedure
4.1 Application for university admission at Egerton University
The application process will be in two stages. The first stage is application for admission to the programme of choice at Egerton University submitted to Egerton University. The second stage is application for the TAGDev scholarship submitted to RUFORUM. Both stages have to be done concurrently, with the application for admission as the first submission.

To apply to Egerton University, applicants are required to submit the following:
- Certified copies of academic certificates, transcripts and high school result slips. Academic certificates, and transcripts should be certified by the institution that issued
- A recently taken passport size photo is required along with a copy of the National ID or Passport (for cases of refugees). NB: Applicants yet to acquire their National IDs are advised to attach copies of their birth
- A CV for those applying for Masters

4.2 Application for Scholarship
The procedure for submitting the TAGDev 2.0 scholarship application through the RUFORUM Information Management System (RIMS) is as follows:
- Access the RIMS Web Portal through; https:// ruforum.org/
- Create your account by clicking on Register
- An email will be sent to your valid email address to activate your account. Please check in the Spam or Junk for message incase activation mail is not reflected in your
- Login using your email and password you used for creating.
- After successful login, the Applicant Dashboard will appear with different options.
- Go to Calls – > Scholarship
- Select the Call ID: RU/2025Egerton Univ/ TAGDev 2.0.
- Click Apply to start filling the Application

- Download, print and submit it with your application form for admission to the
