Prof. Arnold Opiyo Appointed Director of Confucius Institute at Egerton University
Egerton University has announced the appointment of Prof. Arnold Opiyo as the new Director of the Confucius Institute, effective 6 March 2025. Prof. Opiyo, an accomplished researcher in the Department of Crops, Horticulture and Soils at the Faculty of Agriculture, brings with him a wealth of experience in academia and research.
With a specialization in Postharvest Physiology and Technology, Vegetable Science, and African Indigenous Vegetables, Prof. Opiyo is no stranger to innovation and fostering partnerships. His leadership is expected to bolster the Confucius Institute’s mission as a hub for Chinese language instruction, cultural exchange, and the transfer of appropriate technologies from China to Kenya.
Prof. Opiyo’s appointment signals a renewed commitment by Egerton University to strengthening international collaboration and expanding its global footprint. As the Confucius Institute continues to grow, Prof. Opiyo’s expertise in value chains of horticultural crops and capacity building will be pivotal in aligning the Institute’s objectives with Kenya’s development goals, particularly in agriculture and technology.
His leadership is set to deepen the ties between Egerton University and Chinese institutions, opening doors for students and staff to benefit from cross-cultural learning and research opportunities, while enhancing the University’s role as a centre of excellence both locally and internationally.
