In a bid to enhance the experience of international students at Egerton University, the Board of Postgraduate Studies, under the leadership of Prof. George Morara Ogendi, orchestrated a dissemination seminar aimed at addressing various challenges faced by this demographic.
The event, held in collaboration with the Directorate of International Linkages, spearheaded by Prof. Charles M'erimba, along with the Office of the Dean of Students, led by Dr. Japhet Muthamia, the University Hospital, and the CESAAM Project headed by Prof. George Owuor, proved to be a significant success.
During the seminar, students were given a platform to voice their concerns and issues affecting them. Chief among the topics discussed were strategies for ensuring safety and security within the campus vicinity. Prof. Ogendi emphasized the importance of staying in secure locations and cautioned against frequenting areas known for illicit activities such as drug use and brewing dens. He stressed the university's commitment to providing a safe environment conducive to learning.
Furthermore, students were advised on the importance of keeping their travel documents updated and seeking proper permissions when venturing outside the campus premises. This guidance aimed to ensure compliance with legal requirements and to mitigate any potential risks associated with travel.
Many of the international students attending the seminar are beneficiaries of scholarships, and they were reminded of the importance of diligence in their studies. Prof. Ogendi encouraged them to seize the opportunity and make the most of their educational experience at Egerton University.
In a noteworthy initiative, Prof. George Owuor, Director of the CESAAM Project, proposed collaborating with the Board of Postgraduate Studies to organize a #VisitKenya Tour. This tour would allow international students to explore Kenya's diverse landscapes and appreciate its natural beauty before returning to their respective countries. The suggestion was met with enthusiasm, reflecting the university's commitment to providing holistic experiences for its students.
In his address to the attendees, Prof. Ogendi reiterated the university's unwavering support for its international students. He highlighted the array of resources available, including counseling services, health facilities, and educational support programs. Prof. Ogendi emphasized the importance of seeking assistance when needed and assured students of the university's commitment to their well-being.
"We are here to support you in your academic journey and ensure that you enjoy your time on campus," Prof. Ogendi affirmed. "Whether it's psycho-social support, emotional therapy, or educational counseling, our doors are always open to provide the assistance you require."
