Egerton University marked a momentous occasion on Friday, October 27, 2023, as it celebrated its 47th Graduation Ceremony. The event, held at the university's premises in Nakuru, was graced by esteemed dignitaries and brought together a gathering of students, staff, alumni, and guests from near and far. The Chancellor of Egerton University, Dr.Narendra Raval, presided over the ceremony, and the Cabinet Secretary for the Ministry of Education, Science, and Technology Hon. Ezekiel Ombaki Machogu, University Council Members as well as other notable figures, were in attendance.
The ceremony featured an inspiring speech by Everline Adhiambo Ochieng, a graduate of the Faculty of Science who received a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry. She conveyed her gratitude to the university and its community for the transformative experience she and her fellow graduates had undergone during their academic journey.
Ms. Ochieng began by acknowledging the presence of the Almighty in their lives, thanking God for the energy, grace, and protection that guided them throughout their years at Egerton University. She emphasized the role of faith in their achievements and how it had sustained them through every challenge they faced.
Reflecting on their academic journey, Ms. Ochieng highlighted the determination and growth each student had experienced during their time at Egerton. She stated that they had joined the institution as eager but inexperienced individuals and had since grown academically, spiritually, socially, and in character. She quoted Henry Ford, emphasizing the significance of character development as an integral part of true education.
Acknowledging the hard work and dedication of the faculty, Ms. Ochieng paid tribute to the lecturers who tirelessly imparted knowledge to them. She shared anecdotes about their academic pursuits, mentioning the rigorous coursework, laboratory work, exams, and the challenges posed by complex subjects like Clinical Biochemistry. She also noted how the COVID-19 pandemic had presented additional obstacles, affecting students' mental, financial, and academic well-being.
Ms. Ochieng praised the adaptability of the students and the emergence of online classes as a blessing in disguise. She shared a personal story of climbing trees to improve her internet connection to attend classes during the pandemic, highlighting the determination and resilience of the graduating class.
The graduate also expressed profound gratitude to the families, guardians, and sponsors who had supported them throughout their journey. She recognized their sacrifices in paying school fees and providing emotional and material support, underscoring the importance of their contributions. Ms. Ochieng concluded her speech by encouraging her fellow graduands to harness the quality education they had received for employment and job creation in the digital era. She stressed the importance of innovation and utilizing digital platforms to create job opportunities for themselves, emphasizing the theme of the 47th Graduation.
