Egerton University Senior Staff Led by Vice-Chancellor Prof. Isaac Kibwage hosted a team from the Directorate of National Cohesion and Values, in the office of Prime Cabinet Secretary for national values sensitization training. The Egerton senior team included UMB, Deans of faculties, Directors of Institutes, Chair of Departments, and Heads of non-Academic Departments. The Vice-Chancellor underscored Egerton University’s commitment to promoting national unity through its educational programs, research initiatives, and community outreach activities. He highlighted ongoing and planned collaborations that seek to instill values of tolerance, inclusivity, and patriotism among students and staff. The VC emphasized the importance of University management cascading these values to members of staff for purposes of implementation. This should also include incorporating these values on the senior management Performance Contracting. He underscored Egerton University’s commitment to promoting national unity through its educational programs and research initiatives. He highlighted ongoing and planned collaborations that seek to instill values of tolerance, inclusivity, and patriotism among students and staff.

Professor Kibwage noted that Egerton University should not be viewed not only as Academic centre of excellence but also as an institution for transformative leadership, embed on national values. And that, all managerial decisions by senior leadership must reflect principles of good governance including prudent utilization of resources. Representatives from the Cohesion Directorate shared insights on current national cohesion efforts, including upcoming campaigns and initiatives that universities can actively participate in. Representatives from the National Cohesion and Value Directorate led by their Coordinator Mr. Kevin Njoroge shared insights on current national cohesion efforts, and principles of governance and how they were being understood and done. This strategic engagement marks a pivotal step in strengthening the role of higher education institutions in upholding and propagating national cohesion and shared values in Kenya. Mr. Kevin Njoroge said the Directorate has developed a training manual to be used in CBE curriculum. The trainings and outreach sensitization already on course. The roll-out as already started with parents discussion forums with some counties already covered. And more are being done to ensure that all counties are covered.

The Directorate is also engaging and looping-in the sector line organizations like Law Society of Kenya, Media, Faith -based Organizations, before cascading to schools. The training concluded with DVC-Academic Affairs Prof. Bernard Aduda closing on behalf of DVC- Administration, Finance and Planning- Prof. George Muthaa with a call for the top Management to have a mutual agreement with the Cohesion Directorate on a continuous engagement and coordinated efforts toward promoting national values. Prof Aduda called on National Cohesion Directorate to reconsider consolidating the 17 National Values for the purposes of achieving the intended goal. He said achieving these values as separate Key Performance Indicators was capital intensive, time demanding and lack of public good-will may defeat the intended purpose. He said they were achievable in theory but practically could be illusive and not sustainable in long term. The values could be summarized to two or three key thematic areas progressively attainable by people and Institutions as a nation This strategic engagement marked a pivotal step in strengthening the role of higher education institutions in upholding and propagating national cohesion and shared values in Kenya.
