It is my privilege, as Chairman of the Council, to join you on this significant occasion, the Egerton University Open Day and the official launch of Thus Until: A History of Egerton University (1939–2019). Today we celebrate not only 86 years of institutional existence but also the enduring legacy of excellence, resilience and relevance that defines this great University.
The University Council views today’s event as a demonstration of institutional transparency and stakeholder engagement. By opening its doors to the public, Egerton University affirms its commitment to accountability, relevance and service principles that underpin good university governance.
The book being launched today, “Thus Until: A History of Egerton University (1939–2019)”, is of particular significance to Council. It documents how governance structures, leadership transitions, and national education policies shaped the University’s evolution. Commentators have noted that the book does not romanticise history; instead, it presents Egerton University as a living institution, one that has had to make difficult decisions, adapt to changing environments and remain faithful to its mandate. For the Council, this history provides important lessons. It reinforces the centrality of strong governance frameworks, respect for institutional autonomy, prudent financial oversight and strategic leadership. These are not theoretical ideals; they are practical necessities for sustaining a public university in a complex operating environment.
We remain committed to strengthening governance frameworks, promoting fiscal responsibility, and ensuring that institutional policies align with global higher education standards. We acknowledge and salute the leadership of the Vice Chancellor and Management for driving performance and innovation.
