Egerton University Names Mr Charles Wanjohi as Chief Finance Officer
Egerton University has appointed Mr Charles Wanjohi, CPA, as its new Chief Finance Officer (CFO). With extensive experience in financial management and a proven track record in public finance, Mr Wanjohi is expected to bring strategic leadership to the University’s financial operations, ensuring efficiency and accountability.
A Wealth of Expertise in Finance and Administration
Mr Charles K. Wanjohi Chief Finance OfficerMr Wanjohi is a Certified Public Accountant of Kenya and holds a Master of Business Administration (MBA) in Finance Management from the Catholic University of East Africa. His academic journey began at Egerton University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Education and Extension. His multidisciplinary background, which includes specializations in public finance management, accounting and payroll management positions him as a well-rounded professional with a deep understanding of both finance and the broader institutional framework of Egerton University.
Proven Leadership in Financial Management
Prior to his appointment, Mr Wanjohi served in the same position in an acting capacity. He was responsible for overseeing all financial operations, supervising the finance team, and ensuring the University's financial health through strategic budgeting and financial reporting. His duties also included coordinating internal and external audits, responding to audit queries, and implementing recommendations to improve financial oversight and accountability.
Mr Wanjohi played a key role in drafting and implementing financial policies that enhanced efficiency in payroll management, creditors and debtors management, and compliance with regulatory frameworks. His leadership was instrumental in improving the University’s financial reporting processes, ensuring transparency and accountability in financial management.
A Critical Role in University Financial Planning
As outlined in the Egerton University Statutes, the Chief Finance Officer is a vital figure in the institution’s financial administration. The CFO is tasked with planning, administering, and implementing the University’s financial services and systems. Reporting to the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration, Finance, and Planning), Mr Wanjohi will oversee budget formulation, financial planning, and monitoring to ensure optimal resource utilization.
According to the University’s regulations, the position of CFO is appointed through a competitive process, with the selected candidate serving a five-year term, renewable once. The responsibilities extend beyond financial management to include strategic planning, ensuring compliance with national financial regulations, and advising the University’s leadership on financial matters that impact long-term sustainability. Mr Wanjohi’s appointment comes at a critical time when the University is working to enhance financial sustainability and operational efficiency.
