The Faculty of Science at Egerton University, under the leadership of Dean Prof. Steve Omondi, held a vibrant sports day aimed at sensitizing its members on the importance of physical fitness. The event, launched by Deputy Vice Chancellor for Academics, Research, and Extension, Prof. Benard Aduda, brought together over 120 faculty members in a lively atmosphere filled with joy and camaraderie.

Prof. Aduda, who is also a faculty member in the Physics Department, commended the initiative, emphasizing the significance of fitness in maintaining a healthy lifestyle. "I can see some of you have grown bigger, and you may be overweight. Fitness will help you avoid lifestyle diseases while also embracing healthy eating habits. Avoid junk food, drink more water, and let your body rejuvenate," he advised.
The sports day saw a large turnout from all departments within the Faculty of Science, with members enthusiastically participating in various physical activities. The event provided a much-needed break from the routine of research and teaching, fostering both relaxation and professional reflection. They included the teaching, technical and support staff of the faculty
In his address, Prof. Omondi highlighted the faculty’s achievements in research and teaching, acknowledging the contributions of principal investigators and those publishing in peer-reviewed journals. He further encouraged faculty members to enhance their research output, noting that academic progress is essential for professional growth.
"We need to produce more associate professors and full professors through continuous research and publishing. A healthy body and fitness will help you achieve more in your academic journey," Prof. Aduda reiterated.
Among the attendees was Prof. Nzula Kitaka, the Director of Marketing and Resource Mobilization, and a faculty member in the Biological Sciences Department. Prof. Kitaka leads an international joint Limnology program that attracts students from across the globe.
Faculty members were also guided through fitness exercises by a professional trainer under the sweltering sun, learning practical ways to stay fit and active. The event marked a successful step in fostering wellness and academic excellence at Egerton University.
