SUMMARY

Dr Amos Magembe Otara is a Senior Lecturer and Chairman Department of Reproductive Health at the Faculty of Health Sciences, Egerton University, Kenya. He holds a Master of Medicine(MMed) degree in Obstetrics and  Gynecology  and Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) from University of Nairobi. He also holds a Postgraduate Diploma in Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR)from Lund University, Sweden. His area of specialization is in Obstetrics and Gynecology and is registered by the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentist Council (KMPDC) and is a Fellow Eastern Central and Southern Africa College of Obstetrics and Gynaecology (FCOG(ECSA)). He is attached to a busy high out-put public facility, Nakuru County Referral and Teaching Hospital. He is involved in curriculum development and review for undergraduate and post-graduate programmes and is the Academic Programme Leader for the MBChB Programme.. As a senior lecturer Dr, Otara, works to ensure quality training of various cadres of health workers, besides conducting scientific research, publication, and extension. He has spearheaded adoption of new learning and training innovations and technologies through collaboration with local and international partners including simulation-based learning. He upholds evidence-based clinical practices and has been involved in research projects mainly on maternal and neonatal care with the purpose of improving perinatal outcomes through training of staff on proven interventions. Dr. Otara's research has garnered international attention, notably through his involvement in the WOMAN trial, which investigated the effects of early tranexamic acid administration on mortality and morbidity in women experiencing post-partum hemorrhage. This pivotal study, published in the prestigious journal The Lancet, underscores his dedication to improving clinical outcomes for women during childbirth. In addition to his work on post-partum hemorrhage, Dr. Otara has also explored maternal knowledge regarding maternal and neonatal danger signs. His study, published in BMC Research Notes, highlights the importance of educating mothers in Nakuru Central District, Kenya, about recognizing potential health risks for their newborns. Dr.Otara’s motivation is towards alleviating human suffering from health- related challenges through the adoption of current advances in medical diagnostics and therapy. He has been involved in a number of system audits, quality improvement initiatives, adoption and implementation of new strategies and innovations in health care. He is also passionate about SRHR, with emphasis on adolescent health,  promotion of gender equality, and empowerment of women.

Dr. Otara is currently a National Trustee of the Kenya Obstetrical and Gynecological Society and a former National Vice-President of Kenya Medical Association (KMA), the national membership association of doctors that is mandated to promote the welfare of doctors and uphold quality practice of medicine in Kenya.

  • Head of the KMA Procurement committee, involved in tender evaluations and contracting.
  • Chaired the KMA Covid-19 response advisory committee (CRAC) 2020/2022 that regularly brought together a team of experts who continuously reviewed scientific information that was shared with various stakeholders including Government of Kenya (GoK) and health care workers.  
  • Convener of the National Organizing Committee, KMA Annual Scientific Conference 2021, 2022, 2023, involved in fundraising towards the KMA Scientific Conferences amongst other initiatives.
  • Formulation of annual budgets and plans

  • Fundraising towards the KMA local and national Scientific Conferences amongst other initiatives.
  • Led the engagement of medical practitioners and other stakeholders in improving service delivery in both public and private institutions.
