SUMMARY

Dr. Samson Orondo Obure holds a degree in MMED (Internal Medicine) and Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) degree from University of Nairobi. He is currently the Dean Faculty of Health Sciences (FHS), Egerton University. His research interests are in blood group patterns in Kenya and Gastro intestinal tract infections. Dr. Obure was the founding chair of the department of Medical Physiology where he is reputed to have built the department from scratch and encouraged many young Kenyans to join Faculty and build their careers.  He sacrificed his own growth to allow junior colleagues to earn higher degrees. Some earned PhDs and rose to take leadership roles.

He is a long serving academician at Egerton University and senior consultant (Internal Medicine) who has served in various capacities of leadership as the Dean of Faculty and Chairman of Department of physiology and Internal Medicine besides teaching and Research related activities. He diligently carries out his duties in teaching, administration and health related activities at the University and the Nakuru County Teaching and Referral Hospital. Dr. Obure has participated in several projects and collaborations with international partners aiming at improving the quality of learning as per the vision and mission of Egerton University. Through collaborations and support from the University and partners,  he has overseen development of simulation-based Education at the Faculty of Health sciences, development and equipping  of the simulation Laboratory both at the Faculty and the Nakuru County Teaching and Referral Hospital.

Dr. Obure is also a strong champion against traditional practices that negatively impact on health, through support from the Africa Coordinating Centre for the Abandonment of FGM (ACCAF) and The Girl Generation Africa Led Movement (TGG-ALM). He has facilitated and supported faculty who have continued to train and certify all final year medical students on End FGM interventions with the aim of reducing medicalization of FGM and stopping FGM within their generation. On this, Egerton University FHS has been credited as the best and obtained recognition from ACCAF. He has initiated and overseen signing of Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs) between different stakeholders with the most recent (in progress) being between Egerton University and Talent Orange for the Ministry of Health-Germany. This will enable BSCN graduands from Egerton University to secure employment in Germany soon after graduation.
