Prof. KitakaEgerton University, in partnership with the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences (BOKU-Austria), Kyambogo University (Uganda) and Africa Center for Technology Studies (ACTS-Kenya), recently launched the project Strengthening community-based research for river health and climate change mitigation in Eastern Africa (STREM).
The objectives of the project are to improve existing knowledge on rivers via conceptual modelling on the socio-economic and ecological impact on the rivers, to enhance the skills and capacity for research and management of rivers through case studies, to contribute to management frameworks and alternatives for rivers via community-based management, and contribute to knowledge development, dissemination and synthesis in Uganda and Kenya through knowledge integration.
The project funded by the Austrian Federal Ministry of Education, Science and Research within Africa – UniNet Programme came about due to the decrease of water quality in Africa ecosystems vis a vis increasing population that depend on these water sources.
The project, launched on 15th July 2021 via the Zoom platform, will focus on rivers and streams systems in Kenya and Uganda from July 2021 to June 2023.
The scientists involved are Professor Nzula Kitaka of Egerton University, Dr Grace Asiyo Ssanyu and Dr Norah Mutekanga of Kyambogo University (Principal Investigator), Professor Andreas Mlcher, Dr Gabi Slezak and Mr Andreas Bauer of BOKU, and Mr Joel Onyango and Ms Anne Numi of ACTS-Kenya.
