In a ceremony presided over by the University's legal officer, Janet Bii, the new council members of Egerton University took their oaths of office yesterday, February 28, 2024.
The event marked the beginning of their official duties, with a comprehensive induction session that included a tour of various parts of the institution, culminating in a visit to the renowned University farm, Ngongongeri.
The newly sworn-in council members include Mr. Christopher O. Oanda, Mr. Charles N. Njenga, Ms. Brenda N. Lubisia, and Hon. Gideon Koske. These members, alongside the existing council, will play a crucial role in steering the strategic direction of Egerton University.

The Egerton University Council, in accordance with the University’s Act of 2012, comprises nine members. The Chairman and five members are appointed by the Cabinet Secretary responsible for Education. The other members include Amb. Dr. Hukka Wario, who serves as the Chairman of the Council, Mr. Julius K. Mutua, Principal Secretary of the National Treasury and Secretary to the Council, and Prof. Isaac O. Kibwage, HSC B.Pharm, PhD, FPSK, Csci. C. Chem, MRSC, the Vice-Chancellor, who serves as an ex-officio member and secretary to the council.
Broad spectrum of responsibilities
Council members are entrusted with a broad spectrum of responsibilities outlined in the University’s Act. These include the employment of staff, approval of statutes and policies, budget approval, asset management, and receipt and disbursement of grants, donations, or endowments. The Council also has the authority to enter into associations or collaborations with other institutions, both within and outside Kenya, to further the University's objectives.
According to the University’s Act (2012), Council members hold office for a term of three (3) years. During this time, they are tasked with making decisions that shape the academic and administrative landscape of Egerton University, ensuring its continued growth and development.
VC exudes Confidence in Members
Speaking after the induction ceremony, Prof. Isaac O. Kibwage, the Vice-Chancellor and Secretary to the Council, expressed his confidence in the newly sworn-in members. He highlighted the importance of their role in upholding the University's values and fostering an environment conducive to learning, research, and innovation.
"The Egerton University Council plays a pivotal role in guiding our institution towards excellence," remarked Prof. Kibwage. "I am confident that the new members will bring fresh perspectives and expertise to our collective efforts in advancing the University's mission."
The induction session provided the new council members with insights into the institution's rich history, its current academic and research endeavors, as well as its future aspirations. The visit to Ngongongeri farm allowed them to witness firsthand one of Egerton University's flagship projects in agriculture and agribusiness.
As Egerton University embarks on a new chapter under the stewardship of its reconstituted Council, there is optimism for continued growth, innovation, and academic excellence.
The collective efforts of the council members, alongside the broader university community, are poised to propel Egerton University to greater heights in the years to come.
