Members of the Kenya Universities Staff Union (KUSU), Egerton University Chapter, convened for their Annual General Meeting (AGM), where they received comprehensive updates on the union's financial status, collective bargaining milestones, and ongoing efforts to improve staff welfare.
The meeting provided members with a detailed financial report, highlighting the prudent management of the union's resources and reinforcing the leadership's commitment to transparency and accountability.
A key highlight of the AGM was the progress made on the implementation of Collective Bargaining Agreements (CBAs). Members were informed that the union is pursuing the formal registration of the 2013–2017 CBA, a move expected to strengthen the legal enforceability of the negotiated benefits and safeguard employees' rights.
The union leadership also outlined significant welfare initiatives currently under discussion with the University Management. Among them is a proposal to allow employees serving on contract terms to voluntarily join the Egerton University Pension Scheme. The initiative is expected to provide contract staff with an opportunity to build retirement savings and enhance their long-term financial security.
In addition, members were briefed on ongoing negotiations aimed at converting employees who have served the University for extended periods under contract terms to permanent and pensionable employment. The union noted that the discussions seek to recognize the dedication and valuable contributions of long-serving contract staff while promoting job security and equitable employment practices.
Speaking during the meeting, union officials led by Secretary General Mr Bernard Ojiambo and Chairman Mr Benjamin Kipchumba reaffirmed KUSU's commitment to protecting members' interests through constructive engagement with the University Management. Members welcomed the updates and expressed optimism that the ongoing negotiations would yield positive outcomes for staff and further strengthen employee welfare at Egerton University.

KUSU representative to Egerton University Pension Scheme Mr John Kimamo also reminded members to ensure they put in details of their family beneficiaries properly in the records, so that their kin do not lose out.
