Egerton University's 9th Annual Run For Mau Celebrates Success with Distinguished Guests

Egerton University, March 2, 2024

Egerton University's highly anticipated 9th edition of the annual Run For Mau event proved to be a resounding success, drawing enthusiastic participation and esteemed guests, with Council Chair Dr. Hukka Wario leading the university in marking the occasion.

"The Run for Mau cross country has been a success in the efforts to conserve and create awareness about climate change. These are efforts the university is involved in as a target to reach the national tree cover target using sports as a tool to foster real collaboration," said the Council Chair.

Held at the Egerton University sports ground in Njoro, Nakuru County, the event welcomed dignitaries, including Governor Susan Kihika, represented by Deputy Governor David Kones.

“We are indeed glad to have this collaboration for climate change and conservation of our rivers like the River Njoro that drains its water in the Lake Nakuru National Park,” Said Dr Kones , acoompanied by Nakuru CECM for environment and Water Dr Nalson Mara and CECM for Sports, Culture

Egerton University's Vice Chancellor, Prof Isaac Kibwage, through Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Academic Research and Extension, Prof Benard Aduda, underscored the university's steadfast commitment and active involvement in this impactful initiative.

"The fruits of our efforts to make this day a success is to have the cross country take place and produce athletes that will reach international standards like Faith Kipyegon. More importantly, we plant more trees and reduce environmental pollution through carbon emissions. Always remain disciplined with your physical fitness beyond this race," Prof Aduda advised the athletes as he flagged off the 4KM race for the age 11-15 years.

Run For Mau serves as a testament to Egerton University's unwavering commitment to environmental conservation and community engagement. Participants from various backgrounds united to raise awareness and take action towards preserving the Mau Forest Complex, a vital ecosystem in Kenya.

This year's edition not only celebrated harmony among key environmental and sports stakeholders but also highlighted the indispensable role of collective efforts in safeguarding our natural heritage for future generations.

Athletics Kenya officials chaperoned all the race categories as winners were identified in a stiff competition attracting junior, senior, men, women, amateur, and professional athletes who have competed in both local and international competitions.

Representatives from diverse faculties, such as the Faculty of Education, Development Studies (FEDCOS), led by Dean Dr. Flora Fedha, and the Board of Undergraduate Studies, represented by Director Prof. Micah Chepchieng’, along with the Dean of the Faculty of Science, Dr. Steve Omondi Oduor, supported the activities by handling the emanating complaints in the results successfully.

Kenya Commercial Bank, the main sponsor led by General Manager David Nyamu, expressed satisfaction with the event's growth over the years and its role in fostering sporting excellence in Kenya and contributing to the well-being of surrounding communities.

"It is gratifying that this event has recorded tremendous growth over the years thus emerging as a suitable platform for athletes from within the region to hone their skills and represent Kenya at the highest level in local, regional, and international competitions," said Nyamu.

KCB has been a great partner in the event since its inception in 2008, ensuring support for the noble cause aimed at restoring the Mau ecosystem catchment area.

KCB recently flagged off the 2024 KCB Students Scholars program, awarding full scholarships to 50 talented student-athletes to pursue their secondary education in Kenya.

"This year we have put a significant amount Ksh. 2 Million into this 9th Edition of Run For the Mau to facilitate the seamless running of the event again highlighting our firm commitment to support Mau-Egerton University Cross Country. Our focus is to keep supporting such initiatives for the long-term benefit of our people," Mr Nyamu stated.

Director of Marketing, Resource Mobilization, and Agro-Science Park Prof. Paul Kimurto passed a vote of thanks to the stakeholders, including Nakuru County Government, Narok County government, and especially KCB Bank for the support over the years. He also thanked Co-operative Bank, Joy Ellen Hospital, National Defence University of Kenya, Kenya Redcross, St. John Ambulance, Kenya Scouts Association, and Athletics Kenya for their support.

The invaluable support of PELT Security, Centre for Excellence in Livestock Innovation and Agribusiness (COELIB) led by Prof Alexander Kahi who was present early in the morning, Beyond All Core were recognised.
