Egerton University has been ranked among the top five universities in Kenya, according to the latest UniRank 2025 report, as it advances implementation of competency-based education across its campuses.
The university runs its main operations at the Njoro Main Campus in Nakuru County. It also has satellite campuses including the Nakuru City Campus College, Chemeron Field Station Campus in Baringo County, and the Egerton University Mpeketoni Campus in Lamu County. All these campuses are rolling out Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) and Competency-Based Education and Training (CBET) across various academic programmes.
Egerton was also featured in the Times Higher Education (THE) rankings, placing it among East Africa’s top-performing public universities based on teaching quality, research output, citations, industry engagement, and international outlook.
In the Webometrics Ranking of World Universities (July 2024), Egerton ranked 2,876 globally, 101st in Africa, and 4th in Kenya. The university registered notable gains in openness, citations and transparency, rising to 2,622 globally. However, a slight drop was noted in its visibility and research excellence metrics, prompting renewed efforts to strengthen digital engagement.
As at January 2025, webometrics rankings indicator on citations shows that Egerton University improved from 37,575 in July 2024 to 45,743 citations translating to 17.9% improvement.
In the Scimago Institutions Rankings (July 2024), Egerton was ranked 3th in Kenya and 4,151st globally, based on research productivity, innovation, and societal impact.
The Nature Index (June 2024) placed Egerton 3rd nationally and 1,320th globally in health sciences, signalling increased publication output from its Faculty of Health Sciences and other research units.
According to Edurank 2025, the university was ranked 75th in Africa, and 2,999th globally. In Computer Science, Egerton faculty and researchers produced over 1,000 publications with more than 21,000 citations.
Vice Chancellor Prof. Isaac Kibwage said the university is investing heavily in digital transformation, research development, and competency-based teaching to enhance global competitiveness. “We aim to produce hands-on graduates who are ready to deliver solutions,” he said.
Prof. Nzula Kitaka, Director of Marketing and Resource Mobilization, added that Egerton is strengthening strategic partnerships and online visibility to support future ranking gains.
The university has secured over KES 2 billion in research grants within four years, supporting infrastructure, innovation, and community-based projects. Income-generating units, such as the ARC Hotel and model demonstration farms, provide additional training platforms for students.
Established in 1939, Egerton University continues to lead in agricultural and scientific education. With a firm focus on competency-based, research-driven learning, it is positioning itself as a premier institution for Kenya and the region.
