EGERTON
UNIVERSITY
DELIVERED ON FRIDAY, 29th Dec, 2024
DURING THE 48TH GRADUATION CEREMONY
Good morning. It is both a privilege and an honour to join you today as we celebrate a truly momentous occasion—the 49th Graduation Ceremony of Egerton University.
First, I extend my heartfelt gratitude to His Excellency, Dr. William Ruto, for entrusting me once again with the opportunity to serve as the Chancellor of this distinguished institution. This reappointment is not just a personal honour but a reflection of Egerton University’s vital role in Kenya’s development. While His Excellency could not be with us today, I want to acknowledge his ongoing support of education and innovation in our country.
To our Vice Chancellor, Professor Isaac Kibwage, thank you for your exemplary leadership, especially in navigating the university through both financial challenges and the post-pandemic recovery phase. Your commitment to academic excellence and institutional progress has been pivotal.
Ladies and gentlemen,
Today, we celebrate the culmination of years of hard work, dedication, and resilience. To the Class of 2024, this is your day! You are the embodiment of determination, and I am proud to witness the leaders, innovators, and change-makers seated before me. Your achievement is a testament not only to your individual efforts but also to the sacrifices of your families and the guidance of your mentors.
I would like to take a moment to recognize the invaluable contributions of Egerton University’s faculty, staff, and the wider community. Your dedication to teaching, research, and student support ensures that this institution remains a beacon of knowledge and a driver of Kenya’s progress. Our partners and stakeholders also play an essential role in ensuring Egerton remains a leader in education and innovation.
Graduands,
Today you transition from students to alumni, joining an illustrious group of Egerton graduates who have made their mark in Kenya and beyond. I encourage you to actively engage with the Egerton University Alumni Association. This platform offers unparalleled opportunities to network, mentor current students, and contribute to the university’s development.
As alumni, you have the unique ability to inspire future generations, share your professional experiences, and advocate for Egerton’s mission. Being part of this association is not just about staying connected—it’s about giving back and ensuring the institution thrives for years to come.
Allow me to share a brief reflection from my own journey. As many of you know, I began with humble beginnings, working in a steel factory before founding the Devki Group, now one of Kenya’s largest industrial conglomerates. Along the way, I learned the value of perseverance, adaptability, and seizing every opportunity.
To our undergraduates, as you enter the workforce, remember that the journey ahead may be challenging. Job markets can be unpredictable, and success is rarely linear. Equip yourselves with an entrepreneurial mindset, remain curious, and never stop learning.
To our postgraduate, your advanced knowledge positions you to address some of Kenya’s most pressing challenges. Whether through research, innovation, or leadership, your contributions are vital to building a prosperous future for all.
Ladies and gentlemen,
Kenya, like much of the world, is grappling with economic challenges. In such times, the role of education becomes even more critical. While education may not guarantee immediate success, it equips you with the tools to adapt, innovate, and overcome adversity.
Egerton University has taken steps to ensure its graduates are not just academically prepared but also equipped with entrepreneurial skills. These skills are essential in today’s dynamic world, enabling you to create opportunities where none exist and to become job creators rather than job seekers.
This year, Egerton University has demonstrated its vibrancy and dynamism through various milestones. We successfully hosted the Mau-Egerton University Cross Country, which highlights our commitment to fostering holistic development. Additionally, the recently concluded KUPAA National University Drama, Beauty Pageant, Visual Arts, and Film Festival showcased the incredible talent and creativity of our students. These events underscore Egerton’s role as not just an academic institution but a cultural and social hub.
To the faculty and staff,
Your work shapes the future of this university and, by extension, the nation. Your dedication and innovation continue to drive Egerton’s mission forward. I encourage you to remain steadfast in your commitment to excellence and to continue inspiring the next generation of leaders.
As Egerton University looks to the future, I am optimistic about the path ahead. We have faced challenges, including financial constraints, but we are resolute in our commitment to innovation, self-sufficiency, and academic excellence. Together, we will ensure that Egerton remains a pillar of education and development in Kenya.
Graduands,
As you leave this institution today, remember that you carry the Egerton name with you. Be proud ambassadors of this university. Strive to make a difference, not just in your own lives but in your communities and beyond.
Congratulations once again to the Class of 2024! May your future be bright, your ambitions boundless, and your impact immeasurable.
Thank you.
