Egerton University, one of Kenya's premier academic institutions, hosted the 15th Biennial International Conference, an event that brought together scholars, researchers, and policymakers from across the globe. The conference, held under the theme of "Innovation and Collaboration for Sustainable Development," underscored the critical role of universities in addressing the pressing challenges facing the world.

In his opening remarks, the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Isaac Kibwage, emphasized the importance of universities and research institutions in creatively addressing Africa's challenges. Although delivered by the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academics, Research & Extension), Prof.Benard Aduda, Prof. Kibwage's message resonated deeply with attendees. He urged researchers to broaden their focus beyond traditional domains like Agriculture, Environment and Natural Resources, emphasizing the need for interdisciplinary approaches to problem-solving.
" As researchers, we need to redouble our efforts in interdisciplinary research and look into other critical areas such as Engineering, Commerce, the Arts, and Social Sciences among others. This is not only important for our bottom line but will spur innovations in ways that will benefit our communities as a whole. We therefore need to broaden our scope and embrace interdisciplinary approaches to solving our current problems as well as anticipating future ones," remarks from the Prof. Kibwage’s speech.
Moreover, Prof. Benard Aduda in his capacity as the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academics, Research & Extension) called upon the Government to increase research funding and scholarships for young, talented students. Such investments, he argued, are vital for nurturing homegrown talent and driving the agenda of providing indigenous solutions to local challenges.
The Conference also saw a significant contribution from the Chief Guest, the Principal Secretary of the State Department of Higher Education and Research, whose remarks, delivered by Dr David Karanja, highlighted the Government's unwavering support for higher education institutions.
Dr Karanja pointed out the collaboration between the University Funding Board (UFB) and its partners to enhance funding for higher learning institutions. This funding aims to bolster research, innovation, and self-sufficiency, empowering universities to thrive in an increasingly competitive global landscape.
