Job Readiness Training


On January 24th, 2025, Egerton University through TAGDev Program organized a Job Preparedness Skills Training designed to equip fourth-year students with the essential tools and strategies needed to transition smoothly into the professional world.  This comprehensive training, was attended by over 190 students across 7 faculties within the university. It offered a series of interactive sessions that covered critical aspects such as CV writing, job search strategies, interview skills, the role of social media in career development, and tips for preparing for life after campus.

One of the key discussions revolved around developing a good CV and cover letter. Students were taught how to create CVs that stand out by tailoring them to each job application and avoiding common pitfalls such as including irrelevant personal details or using generic templates. The session also emphasized the importance of crafting a personalized cover letter to introduce oneself and highlight why they are the perfect fit for the role.

Another valuable session focused on mastering job interviews. Students learnt about the different types of interviews whether in-person, phone, or virtual and were given practical tips for succeeding in each format. One of the highlights was learning the STAR technique (Situation, Task, Action, Result), which helps students confidently respond to behavioral interview questions.

The session on preparing for life after campus provided students with insights on managing their time effectively, financial planning, and how to navigate their post-campus transition. Networking was a significant focus of this session, with practical advice on building professional relationships and leveraging alumni connections for future career opportunities.

In today’s digital age, the role of social media in career development has become more crucial than ever. Students were guided on how to professionally brand themselves on platforms like LinkedIn, engage with industry content and use these networks to discover job opportunities. The session stressed the importance of maintaining a polished online presence to attract potential employers and avoid sharing unprofessional content.

Beyond technical skills, the workshop offered students a range of key benefits, including enhanced employability, improved communication, and increased confidence. The event also fostered a mindset of continuous learning.

Looking ahead, Prof. Agnes Oywaya-Nkurumwa shared exciting plans for Egerton University, revealing that the institution is in the process of establishing a dedicated Career Services Office to further support students as they embark on their professional journeys.
