Message from Chairman of Department

In May 2015, the World Health Assembly (WHA) passed a resolution to include emergency surgical and anesthetic care as a component of Universal Health Coverage. The cornerstone of good surgical outcomes is adequate training on principles of safe surgery and anesthesia. To achieve this end, the Department of Surgery in collaboration with the Nakuru County Referral Hospital is geared towards providing mentorship in General Surgery, Orthopedics and Trauma, Plastic Surgery, Anesthesia &Critical Care; and Neurosurgery.

Being an academic department, one of our main objectives is to take part in surgical training in the university. Thus we do service the following programmes:

1.Bachelor of Medicine & Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB)

2.Bachelor of Science (Clinical Medicine)

3. Diploma in Clinical Medicine

In addition, our members have continued to provide local faculty for the regionally recognized COSECSA surgical fellowship programme. This programme runs on volunteer basis with registrars attached to the Nakuru County Referral Hospital. The COSECSA programme has been vital towards the ongoing development of a Master of Medicine (Surgery) curriculum.

The department has also been instrumental in training of the Higher National Diploma in Anesthesia at the Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC), Nakuru Campus.

As a department, we remain thankful to the University and the community at large for the challenge placed on us. We will always strive to excel in training, care and research in perioperative medicine.
