Geography is concerned with human and physical environmental systems and their
interaction, mapping and measuring natural and man-made resources, designing ways of
using them, analyzing the distribution of welfare, recognizing and averting hazards and
reviewing social institutions. In Kenya today, there is a shortage of manpower with
appropriate knowledge and skills for necessary modern geographical studies. The
Department of Geography has developed a Post-graduate programme leading to a Master
of Arts/Science degree in Geography to cater for the expressed need.
The graduate programme is expected to: Train high level modern Geographers who carry
out both qualitative and quantitative research and analysis through appropriate synthesis
and mapping in Geography.
Candidates for the Ph.D. in Geography must have MA/MSc its equivalent in Geography
or Geography with a related field from a recognised university or institution of higher
Course Structure and Duration
The Ph.D in Geography will be offered by independent research and thesis.
The programme shall extend for a minimum of thirty six36. months and a maximum of
seventy two72. months. All candidates enrolled for the Ph.D. degree in Geography shall
be required to conduct independent research, leading to writing of a thesis. The defense of
the thesis shall be conducted in accordance with the rules established in Egerton
All examinations for the Doctor of Philosophy in Geographyshall be conducted in
accordance with examination regulations as stipulated in Egerton University Statute
The grading of examination for Ph.D. in Geography shall be in accordance with Egerton
University Statute XXIX.
To graduate with a Ph.D in Geography a student shall be required to undertake supervised
independent research, submit a thesis and pass an oral examination.
