Geography is concerned with human and physical environmental systems and their
interaction, mapping and measuring natural and man-made resources, designing ways of
using them, analyzing the distribution of welfare, recognizing and averting hazards and
reviewing social institutions. In Kenya today, there is a shortage of manpower with
appropriate knowledge and skills for necessary modern geographical studies. The
Department of Geography has developed a Post-graduate programme leading to a Master
of Arts/Science degree in Geography to cater for the expressed need.
The Post-graduate Programme is expected to: Train high level modern Geographers who
carry out both qualitative and quantitative research and analysis through appropriate
synthesis and mapping in Geography.
The common regulations of the Master‘s degree in all faculties of Egerton University
Statutes shall be applicable.
Candidates for the M.A. in Geography must have at least a Second Class Hons. Upper
division degree or its equivalent in Geography or Geography with a related field from a
recognised university or institution of higher learning. Minimum requirement in
Geography subject is ―B‖ grade.
Course Structure and Duration
The M.A. /MSC in Geography consists of course work, examination and thesis.
The programme shall consist of a minimum of 30 CF of course work which will be
distributed over two semesters as of 15 CF each. Students must do all the five compulsory
courses in the first semester. Students should do a total of five other courses and not more
than two from one specialised area in the second semester. In the Second Year the
candidates will be required to carry out research and present a thesis.
The topic of thesis shall be chosen following consultation with the supervisor/advisor and
with the approval of the Department. The programme shall extend for a period of not less
than 18 months and not more than 36 months.
All examinations for the MA/MSc in Geography shall be conducted in accordance with
examination regulations as stipulated in Egerton University Statute XXIX.
The grading of examination for MA/MSc in Geography shall be in accordance with Egerton
University Statute XXIX.
To graduate with MA/MSc in Geography a student shall be required to take and pass all
required courses within the stipulated time.
