External Studies and Media Department

The External Studies and Media department function among others, is to support the College of Open and Distance Learning to develop delivery technologies for distance learning. The department has also been administering external programmes arising from collaborations between Egerton University and other universities, in the areas of Open and Distance learning. These include the Applied Computer Science programme of the Royal Melbourne University (RMIT) brokered through the African Virtual University (AVU). This Programme ended in 2007. The department also managed the University of South Africa distance learning programme which ended in 2011. However, pipeline students are still continuing to clear their studies. There is no registration of new students. The department is now managing the Open University of Tanzania Distance learning programme where Kenyan students who may not manage to attend formal timetabled classes due to a range of reasons, can study at home or during their free time, a subject of their choice. Through this collaboration, many Kenyans are register study undergraduate and postgraduate programmes by the Open University of Tanzania, but pay their fees and sit exams at Egerton University.

Mission

To provide high quality support services to distance learning students to maximize their potential for success in the programmes run by the department.

Core Functions

In order to achieve the department has three strategic objectives of providing quality higher education and training; partnership and networking and resource mobilization. In the light of these, recruits Kenyan students into the OUTz programmes, collects fees on behalf of OUTZ participate in the students’ orientation programmes, invigilate all exams for the students and keep in touch with the local OUTZ representative. The department is involved in resource mobilization through the income earned through this collaboration.

The aims of this department are derived from the strategic objectives of Egerton University. These are of providing quality higher education and training; partnership and networking and resource mobilization.

Roles

The External Studies and Media Department advertises and recruits students into the the various OUTZ programs. Manages the fees collection and remittance for Kenyan students registered through the collaboration between these two institutions. Invigilates all the exams. It clears all Kenyan students under this collaboration that they have cleared all their fees before they can graduate. It does all that is necessary to ensure that the students are facilitated for a smooth operation of their study programmes.
