There is a great need for adequately prepared personnel at the post-graduate level to assist in training of science Educators, administrators and specialists. The M.Ed degree in science Education is biased towards the study of science Education and provides preparation for those who intend to proceed to research in Education or who wish to equip themselves with a critical understanding of published research.
At the end of the training the graduates should be able to:
i) Prepare personnel to serve as researchers, Educators and administrators of science Education;
ii) Evaluate science Educational programmes;
iii) Design and conduct research in science Education.
(i) The common regulations for masters‟ degree of the Egerton University shall apply;
(ii) The general regulations for masters‟ degrees in the Faculty of Education and Human Resources shall apply;
(iii) In addition to (i) and (ii) the following shall be eligible for registration for Masters Degree in Science Education.
(a) Holders of B.Ed Science with at least Upper Second Class Honours of Egerton University or any other recognized University;
(b) Holders of B.Sc general with at least Upper Second Class Honours with Postgraduate Diploma in Education of Egerton University or from a recognized University.
Course Structure and Duration
Duration of Study
The Masters Degree Programme in Science Education shall extend for a period of at least 18 months but not more than 36 months for full-time students or at least 36 months but not more than 48 months for part-time students.
(a) The M.Ed in Science Education Programme will consist of coursework, examination and thesis. The coursework and thesis shall constitute 30 and 15
credit factors respectively.
(b) During the first year of study candidates will be required to take ELEVEN courses of which six will be compulsory and FIVE electives.
(c) During the second year of study candidate will be required to attend seminars, do research and submit a thesis.
All examinations for this programme shall be conducted in accordance with examination regulations as stipulated in the Egerton University Statute XXIX
The grading of examinations for this programme shall be conducted in accordance with in Egerton University Statute XXIX.
To graduate a student shall be required to take and pass ALL scheduled courses within the stipulated period.
The Master of Science Education degree is not classified in accordance with Egerton University Statute XXIX.
