Rationale
The Master of Education degree in Educational Management aims at preparing students for careers in Educational sectors such as university teaching, institutional administration, programme management, supervision of schools, Educational planning, economics of Education, researchers and consultants. The programme puts more emphasis on the functional areas of Educational management and strongly on development of skills for problems solving, leadership, situational analysis and policy development. Students are trained to perform „hands-on. basic organization functions, and combine with the theoretical knowledge acquired and the analytic skills to identify and define problems, analyse them, generate alternative solutions, choose among the best alternative decisions and implement them.
104.2 Programme Objective
The goal of the Master of Education degree in Educational Management is to provide students with a wide range of skills, knowledge and attitudes to respond to the needs of Educational institutions for effective management and development.
By the end of the programme, the learner will be able to:
i) Have acquired knowledge, skills and positive attitudes of Educational management;
ii) Effectively manage resources at their disposal i.e. people, finances, time according to established rules;
iii) Carry out research on issues arising from their Educational practice;
iv) Apply the acquired knowledge skills and attitudes to influence Educational policy, programmes and general development of Educational institutions;
v) Contribute positively to the larger issues of Educational policy and practice.

Admission Requirements
All candidates admitted to the programme of Master of Education in Educational Management must satisfy the minimum common entrance requirements of Egerton University.In addition, candidates must be holders of at least an Upper Second Class degree in Education; At least an Upper Second Class degree in any filed, plus a recognized Post Graduate Diploma n Education;
Admission may be offered to exceptional cases as stipulated in the Graduate School Rules for Masters degree programme
Course Structure and Duration
The Master of Education degree in Educational Management shall, in accordance with the rules and regulations for the masters degree programmes of Egerton University, extend for a period of not more than 36 months for full-time students, or not more than 48 months for part-time students.
Regular Mode:Course work and thesis:- course work will take two semesters followed by research, Thesis writing and defence. Course work and Project:- Course work will take two semesters followed by research project writing.
School Based Mode: Course work and thesis:- Course work will take three sessions followed by research, thesis writing and defence.
. Course work and project:- Course work will take four sessions followed by research project writing.
. The Regular mode is offered on semester basis.
. Two semesters are required to complete course work.
The school-based mode is offered on session basis. The sessions are offered during the following times:-
i) 3 weeks in April
ii) 3 weeks in August
iii) 4 weeks in November/December
This is the period when the potential students are on leave from their places of work. Its potential students are school teachers, Educational officers, Inspectors and general public who meet the admission requirements.
Students will be required to register for and pass all core and elective course with a loading of 48 credit factors before graduation.
At least 33 CFs must be from course work for candidates writing a thesis, of which 24
shall be from core courses; while at least 42 CFs of course work for candidates writing a project, of which 24 shall be from core courses.
After successful completion of course work, students will be expected to undertake research, thesis writing, and oral defence for 15 credit factors, or project for 6 credit factors.
The programme offers the following three areas of specialization, from which the candidate shall choose one:
Option 1: Educational Administration
Option 2: Economics of Education
Option 3: Educational Planning
Transfer of credits is permitted as stipulated in the Graduate School Rules and Regulations of Master degree programmes.
All courses offered by the Department of Education Administration and Planning shall be coded EAPE
This shall be followed by a course number consisting of three digits:
. The first digit 6 shall represent the graduate level study.
. The second digit is the area of specialization. Areas of Specialization shall be indicated as follows:-
Core Courses 0
Education Administration 1
Economics of Education 2
Educational Planning 3
Research Courses 4
. The last digit is the sequence of the course in the area of Specialization
104.5 Examination Regulations
All examinations for this programme shall be conducted in accordance with examination regulations as stipulated in the Egerton University Statute XXIX
Grading System
The grading of examinations for this programme shall be conducted in accordance with in Egerton University Statute XXIX.
Graduation Requirements
To graduate a student shall be required to take and pass ALL scheduled courses within the stipulated period.

Degree Classification

The Master of Education in Education Management degree is not classified in accordance with Egerton University Statute XXIX.
