Doctor of Philosophy Degree in Mathematics Education



Rationale
There is a great need for adequately prepared personnel at the doctoral level to assist in training of Mathematics educators, researchers, administrators and other specialists. The degree provides skills, knowledge and research techniques in Mathematics education to empower the graduates of the programme in the development and implementation of Mathematics programmes. It is expected that the Doctor of Philosophy Degree in Mathematics Education shall provide highly trained personnel to formulate policies and make informed decisions on Mathematics education issues.
Programme Objectives
The programme should:
i) Prepare personnel to serve as researchers, educators and administrators of mathematics education;
ii) Evaluate mathematics education programmes;
iii) Design and conduct research in mathematics education.
Admission Requirements
Candidates must satisfy entry requirements for Egerton University. In addition admission shall be offered to holders of Master of Education degree in Science Education or its equivalent. Applicants for the Doctor of Philosophy programme in Science Education shall be required to present a research project proposal acceptable to the Department of Curriculum, Instruction and Education Management.
Course Structure and Duration
Doctor of Philosophy programme in Science Education shall last for a period of not less than three years and not more than five academic years.
Examination Regulations
All examinations for this programme shall be conducted in accordance with examination regulations as stipulated in the Egerton University Statute XXIX
Grading System
The grading of examinations for this programme shall be conducted in accordance with in Egerton University Statute XXIX
Graduation Requirements
To graduate a student shall be required to take and pass ALL scheduled courses within the stipulated period.

Degree Classification
The Doctor of Philosophy degree in Science Education Psychology is not classified in accordance with Egerton University Statute XXIX
