Doctor of Philosophy in Medical Parasitology

Rationale
This course is designed to give a systematic and logical approach to new developments in epidemiology and clinical practice of parasitology. Particular emphasis will be on host parasite interactions, identification of ―new‖ drug targets, development and application of modern diagnostic procedures, planning, implementation, supervision and evaluation of parasitic disease control programmes at national and international level. The student will apply the knowledge and skills acquired to the development of effective techniques in human disease control for improved human health and provision of consultancy services. They will be eligible for employment in medical institutions, research institutions, consultancy firms, institutions of higher learning and nongovernmental organizations.
Programme Objectives
The programme is designed to produce competitive Medical Parasitologists, professional scientists, lecturers, consultants and researchers in the field of Medical Parasitology. The course will provide skills to deal with current and potential tropical diseases and control strategies using current research methodologies.
Admission Requirements
Applicants should be holders of M.Sc in Medical Parasitology, or related disciplines from Egerton University or any other recognized University.
Course Structure and Duration
The Ph.D programme will extend for a minimum period of 36 months and a maximum of 72 months All candidates shall conduct independent research, with the direction of a subject specialist, write and submit a thesis, in fulfilment for Ph.D in Medical Parasitology.
Thesis Examination
All candidates enrolled for the Ph.D. degree in Medical Parasitology shall be required to conduct independent research, leading to writing of a thesis. The defense of the thesis shall be conducted in accordance with the rules established in Egerton University Statute XXIX.
Examination regulations
All examinations for the Doctor of Philosophy in Medical Parasitology shall be conducted in accordance with examination regulations as stipulated in Egerton University Statute XXIX.
Grading
The grading of examination for PhD in Medical Parasitology shall be in accordance with Egerton University Statute XXIX.
Graduation Requirements
To graduate with a PhD in Medical Parasitology a student shall be required to undertake independent research, submit a written thesis and pass an oral thesis examination.
