Rationale
The decline in the contribution of the Agricultural sector to Kenya‟s Gross Domestic Product has been attributed to, among other things, poor technologies, and lack of well-trained manpower in this sector. The Agricultural Engineering programme covers areas such as Soil and Water Conservation, Farm Power and Machinery, Irrigation, Agricultural Structures, Agricultural Processing, and Renewable energy, which are all crucial in enhancing the performance of the Agricultural sector. The programme has thus been designed with emphasis on practical approach incorporating the current advancements in technology to satisfy the technical manpower requirements for the Agricultural Industry and to achieve Kenya‟s development goal of industrialisation in the year 2030.
Programme Objectives
The main aim of this programme is to train and graduate agricultural engineers. At the end, the programme will produce an engineer who will be able to:
i) Prepare an agricultural engineer to plan, design, modify, and direct the manufacture of agricultural machinery & implements for different agricultural production systems.
ii) Prepare an engineer to plan and design Soil & Water conservation engineering structures and modern irrigation and drainage systems.
iii) Provide practical training to the engineer to contribute practical solutions to agricultural production problems.
iv) Inculcate the engineer with sound theoretical knowledge in engineering principles, sciences, research and in consultancy.
v) Impart positive and responsive out-reach attitudes, initiative and creative thinking in their mission as engineers.
vi) Produce a professional engineer who understands ethical issues and responsibility of serving the society and the environment at large.
vii) Train an engineer equipped with effective written and oral communication skills.
Admission Requirements
All candidates admitted to the degree programme of Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Engineering (B.Sc. Agricultural Engineering) must satisfy the minimum entrance requirements stipulated in the common university entrance regulations.

In addition, candidates must obtain at least the minimum grades in the following cluster subjects at Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (K.C.S.E).

Those holding qualifications equivalent to the K.C.S.E above from institutions recognized by Egerton University Senate may also be admitted.
Admission may be offered to outstanding diploma holders in engineering disciplines who have passed with a credit or above or their equivalent from institutions recognized by Egerton University Senate. Such cases will be treated on individual merit.
Transfer of credit up to a maximum of 30% of the total CF may be considered for diploma holders based on the guidelines stipulated by the Senate.
Self-sponsored applicants shall be required to meet the University and Faculty admission criteria.
Course Structure and Duration
The programme shall be covered in five academic years each consisting of two semesters of 17 weeks each. All students are expected to undergo an Internal Engineering Practice and an external Industrial/Field Attachment each lasting 8 weeks after the third and fourth years, respectively.
Courses offered by the Department of Agricultural Engineering are each coded by a three-digit figure preceded by the term „AGEN‟ to represent Agricultural Engineering. The first digit represents the year in which the course is offered. The second digit represents the discipline in which the course falls within the range of courses offered in the Department. The third digit represents the series of the course within a discipline in any given year of study. Listed below are the various disciplines in which the Agricultural Engineering courses fall and their corresponding digits:
1- Introductory Courses
2- Electrical courses
3- Farm Power and Machinery
4- Processing and Structures
5- Soil and Water Engineering
6- Field/General Experience
Examination Regulations
All Examinations for this programme shall be conducted in accordance with the Examination regulations as stipulated in the Egerton University Statutes number XXVIII.
Grading System
The grading of Examinations for this programme shall be conducted in accordance with Egerton University Statutes number XXVIII.
Graduation Requirements
To graduate a student shall be required to take and pass ALL scheduled course within the stipulated period.
Degree Classifications
Degree classification shall be in accordance with Egerton University statutes number XXVIII.
